Crafting the Nutcracker
A VIRTUAL NUTCRACKER EXPERIENCE
HISTORY
Bringing Quality Ballet Productions for East County
In 2009, Black Diamond Ballet was created by co-founders Michael Lowe and Sharon Sobel Idul, becoming the first professional ballet company in East Contra Costa County. Since its founding, Black Diamond Ballet has proudly called the historic Pittsburg Creative Arts Building home since 2009. That year, the company debuted its own rendition of the Nutcracker, followed by Lowe’s excerpts from Romeo and Juliet in May 2010.
The historic theater underwent renovations from 2010 - 2012 and after its hiatus, Idul returned as Artistic Director for Black Diamond Ballet. The beautifully transformed 1,850-seat theater, became home, once again to Black Diamond Ballet's full-length production of the Nutcracker featuring professional dancers & guest artists, accompanied by locally trained student dancers across the Bay Area. The most recent year's show featured professional dancers from Pittsburg to the South Bay, across North America to Europe, accompanied by nearly 40 locally trained student ballet trainees from all over the Bay Area.

Black Diamond Ballet remains dedicated to the community through its outreach programs with local elementary schools, public appearances, fundraising events, and our local retirement and senior communities.
